FAQ
What ingredients are used in your candles?
Our candles are all made using natural soy wax, natural metal-free cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrance oils and dyes. We aim to strike a balance between putting a quality product on your shelf and sourcing our ingredients consciously.
Why do you not use essential oils?
Have you ever noticed that a candle made using essential oils usually doesn't emit any scent after the first burn? That's because most essential oils have a low flash point, meaning the oil combusts at a relatively low temperature. This leads to most of the oil in the candle being combusted with the first burn. We choose to use fragrance oils, which have a stabilizing oil component, combined with essential oil, that raises the flash point to an appropriate level for use in candlemaking. We also mix the fragrance into the entire batch of wax for pouring, rather than just layering a scented layer on the top of the candle.
What if I don't trim the wick?
Wick trimming is very important because it keeps the candle from burning at too high a temperature and with too large a flame. Higher temperature burns can lead to shorter burning lives, and larger flames can be dangerous and heat glass containers to the point that they crack or shatter.
What are your most popular scents?
Barton Springs [Sea Salt + Orchid], Zilker [Sandalwood + Eucalyptus + Cactus Flower], and Lady Bird Lake [Black Currant + Absinthe] are our best selling candle scents.
What is the white "frosting" on the top of my candle?
Soy wax will "frost" when exposed to temperature/moisture changes, or as the candle gets older. This frosting does not affect the candle's burning or fragrance load, and is more exacerbated with colored candles.
Why are there drops of liquid on the top of my candle?
Soy wax contains natural oils that may leach out as the candle cures - this is completely normal. You may use a small tissue or paper towel to wipe this off - the candle will not burn any differently if some of the oils are wiped off.
Do you accept returns?
We will gladly exchange or refund any unused candles within 30 days of purchase. Your satisfaction is our ultimate goal, so if you are not satisfied with your purchase, please let us know and we will make it right.
Do you have a store?
We do have a small store that is attached to our production studio - most of the year it is available by appointment only, but we maintain regular hours during the holiday season (Thanksgiving - Christmas). You can find our products in person at various retailers around Austin, or at one of the markets/events we are participating in.
Where do the candle names come from?
All candles in the ATX series are named for various neighborhoods or landmarks in the Austin area. When the City series is released, you'll see some city names like Dallas, San Antonio, and Atlanta.
Who is Susan?
There actually is no one person named Susan involved with the company, though we are all Wild Susans in our own right. The origin of the name is from a friends' dinner and some antics surrounding the lazy susan in the middle of the table - please ask us...we love sharing our story!
